A non native British tree introduced around 1600

  • A large tree growing on deep, rich, well drained soils disliking wet, peaty or shallow soils
  • It is often grown for its walnuts for humans consumption and is a favourite food of rooks
  • Its timber is one of the finest, especially valued in cabinetry and for veneering
  • Mature height 22 metres
  • A good choice for woodland, hedgerow, parkland, urban locations and field edge planting
