Corylus avellana (Hazel)

A native British tree

  • A small deciduous tree that grows well on a range of chalk, limestone and clay soils
  • Male catkins appear in late winter and the autumn nuts attract small mammals
  • Hazel is often coppiced for fencing, hurdles, thatching spars and firewood
  • Coppiced woods are particularly good for wildlife as its open nature allows light to reach the woodland floor benefiting flowers and butterflies and other insects
  • Mature height 15 metres
  • A good choice for hedgerow, woodland and an excellent tree for coppicing
