Corylus avellana (Hazel)
A native British tree
- A small deciduous tree that grows well on a range of chalk, limestone and clay soils
- Male catkins appear in late winter and the autumn nuts attract small mammals
- Hazel is often coppiced for fencing, hurdles, thatching spars and firewood
- Coppiced woods are particularly good for wildlife as its open nature allows light to reach the woodland floor benefiting flowers and butterflies and other insects
- Mature height 15 metres
- A good choice for hedgerow, woodland and an excellent tree for coppicing
