A non-native British tree introduced by the Romans
- Grows well in deep moist sandy and drained clay soils.
- This tree is often part of a managed coppiced woodland and can live up to a thousand years in this manner
- Its wood is hard and used as fenceposts, the nuts can be roasted and eaten
- A good tree for nesting birds and its nuts support birds and small mammals
- Mature height 20 metres
- A good choice for hedgerow, parkland, woodland and an excellent tree for coppicing
