Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam)
A native British tree
- Native to the south east of England tolerating a wide range of soils including sands, gravels and heavy clay but preferring damp fertile soils
- A useful tree for poor planting conditions
- A large tree, with very hard wood, especially good for chopping blocks and firewood
- It has fine colourful foliage in autumn and retrains its foliage in winter
- Mature height 22 metres
- A good choice for parkland, woodland and forestry tree and excellent hedge for formal gardens
