A native British tree

  • Native to the south east of England tolerating a wide range of soils including sands, gravels and heavy clay but preferring damp fertile soils
  • A useful tree for poor planting conditions
  • A large tree, with very hard wood, especially good for chopping blocks and firewood
  • It has fine colourful foliage in autumn and retrains its foliage in winter
  • Mature height 22 metres
  • A good choice for parkland, woodland and forestry tree and excellent hedge for formal gardens
