- Due to its nitrogen fixing nodes it is one of the few trees to survive in very wet, waterlogged flood prone places
- This tree is an important conservation species supporting may hundreds of invertebrates and its seeds provide winter food for seed-eating birds such as siskins and redpolls
- Mature height 17 metres
- A good choice for riverside locations, flood planes and re-wilded river and scrub woodlands
